Stimulus Checks for the Homeless

Stimulus Checks for the Homeless

Here are steps for those that are are experiencing housing issues to take in order to acquire their stimulus checks. It is important still to talk to a tax preparer and verify how funds would be acquired when helping this population so that they are best able to make a choice on how they want to use their funds.

Steps to take:

  1. Go to a tax preparation office, be sure to look for free tax preparation resources:
  2. File as a non-filer return for the tax year 2020.
  3. Show a State ID, there are issues with the issues facing housing insecurity having access to proper identification in this instance it would be helpful to access a resource center that will help them apply to get a State ID and help with the cost of application. The CARE Complex does these types of services.

Keep in Mind:

  • There can be a processing fee applied for filing so factor that into the cost.
  • Those applying will be asked if they received previous payments, if they did not receive any other stimulus payments during the pandemic, then the return will show a refund for the total amount of all the stimulus checks sent out during the course of the pandemic.
  • The refund can be placed on a prepaid debit card, which makes the funds easy to access for this population to use.
  • Once the IRS accepts the return then the individuals applying for the return can be eligible for all the stimulus checks that were sent out due to the pandemic.
